Best Float Award!

I’m very happy to announce that our kids’ hard work in participating in this year’s Leesburg Christmas Parade was rewarded!  Our beautiful float, themed, “Jesus: Born To Die So You May Live,” received the Best Float award by the Kiwanis club of Leesburg!  Read more about it  at Loudoun Now.

Hundreds of people from our church, Calvary Temple, braved the cold weather in order to make the name of Jesus big.

Christmas Parade
Kids Marching in Old Town Leesburg

What a beautiful night this year!  It wasn’t snowy or as cold as last year.    My favorite part in the Leesburg Christmas Parade is always when my church comes by.

The young kids dressed up as the Nativity and enjoyed the 2 mile journey while riding on the float and waving to the many spectators.  Having cared for all these children since they were babies, seeing them all grown up is very sweet for me.

The older kids, along with help from their teachers and many Young Adults, looked sharp in their matching outfits.  The light up gloves, which show very well during the night-time parade, are a crowd favorite.

Having a blast!

Overall, we had a great time this year.  Lord-willing, I’m excited to see what next year will bring!

Born To Die So You May Live – Christmas Parade 2017

Christmas Parade

Making Jesus Big

For the past few years, our church has had the opportunity to participate in the annual Leesburg Christmas parade.  The purpose is to make the name of Jesus big during the Christmas season.

“And I, when I am lifted up from the earth, will draw all people to myself.” (John 12:32, ESV) Bible Gateway

Christmas Parade

Our float and parade participants march 2 miles, from Ida Lee Park to Catoctin Circle in Old Town Leesburg.  Many parents and church members (myself included) join the crowd to support our children and to share the Gospel.

The message for this year’s float was, “Born To Die So You May Live.”

The morning of the parade, we were greeted with small snow flakes that fell gently from a clear white sky.  It was like being in a snow globe!  Beautiful start to the day.  The weather did however worsen, as snow turned to freezing rain.  This did not deter our dedicated team!

Our Christmas Parade

Our team did an excellent job, as always!  I could hear the team’s music before their sign came into view.  Our parade started with a, “Jesus is Lord” sign, to make the Name of Jesus big.

Christmas Parade

It was followed by our Young Adults’ passing out candy and Gospel tracts.

Christmas Parade

Next came the float (shown above), which had some children dressed as the classic Nativity scene.  This was followed by a big white truck with the Gospel message in 1 Corinthians 3:4, 17, that Jesus Christ died for our sins.

Christmas Parade

This was followed by my favorite part, the Youth Group (and others) performing a synchronized marching routine to lively Christmas songs.

Christmas Parade

Our elementary kids came next, dressed as presents and snowflakes.  This was many of our parents’ favorite part, and not a few cameras came out.

Christmas Parade

Our youngest kids rode in a fancy Christmas Train, which kept them nice and warm and saved them the 2 mile walk.

Christmas ParadeChristmas Parade

Our parade was finished off by a, “Merry Christmas” sign.

Christmas Parade

Sharing the Gospel

My church spent the weeks prior to the parade praying, asking Father to draw the people He wanted there so they could hear the Gospel and be saved.  The Young Adults involved in the parade handed out candy and Gospel tracts to the crowd.

Christmas Parade

Those of us in the crowd were also prayerful about using this opportunity to reach the lost.  We came prepared with tracts.

Personally, as I made my way along the wet sidewalks of Old Town Leesburg with my friend Katie from church, I was blessed as at one point everyone we passed by was already holding a tract!  Someone had been very diligent.

Katie and I were able to share with one family in particular.  They were believers new to the area, and the mystery person from my church had already shared with the husband!  The Lord must have really wanted this family to be encouraged.  He is so good to His people.  Meeting the family was a blessing, and we encouraged each other with testimonies of how the Lord provided for us.

Overall, despite the snow, it was obvious that the Lord answered our prayers and drew people to the parade so they could hear the Gospel.  A few families I spoke with said it was the first time they had attended the parade.  Though we may never know the fruit of our efforts, we know the Lord was glorified.

” In the same way, let your light shine before others, so that[they may see your good works and give glory to your Father who is in heaven.” (Matthew 5:16, ESV) Bible Gateway

Special thanks to our photographers for this event, who braved the weather to take beautiful pictures for us!

Christmas Caroling

Caroling 1

Christmas Carolers

Can a Christmas season ever truly be complete without caroling?  I think not!  It was strongly on the hearts of one of our men, Mark, to gather a group of carolers so they could share the love of Jesus this year.  A number of our families, choir and band members, and Young Adults were able to minister in this manner last Saturday.

And he said to them, “Go into all the world and proclaim the gospel to the whole creation.” (Mark 16:15, ESV) Bible Gateway

Despite the cold weather, the group met at Mark’s house for brief instructions and received a red or green caroling booklet with the lyrics to Christmas songs.

Caroling Prep

The carolers headed out as one large group, and broke into small groups of two or three as neighbors wanted to talk.

Carolers

Jane

Carolers with Neighbor

Kristy, Jane, and Lindsay

A highlight of the night was how the Lord ordered their steps to meet another strong believer, a glamorous, godly woman named Jane.  After our carolers stopped by her house, a couple Young Adult ladies, Kristy and Lindsay, stayed behind to fellowship with Jane.  They learned that Jane was a believer whose husband was an evangelist!  They traveled the world sharing the Gospel.  Jane took a job at the CIA, and her husband kept traveling to share the Gospel.  Unfortunately, he passed away several weeks ago.

My friend, Lindsay, was able to meet with her neighbor, Jane, again today.  They fellowshipped for a while, and Jane shared how she used to teach teenagers about the Lord.  Lindsay was very encouraged to see Jane’s Bible and an E. M. Bounds book on Prayer in the house.  Lindsay was also blessed to see a picture of a family in the Philippines that Jane and her husband used to pray for.

Isn’t it wonderful how the Lord orders our steps?  Jane, Lindsay, and Kristy were very encouraged to meet each other.  Who knows what good fruit will come from the carolers willingness to go out on a cold night to preach the Gospel?

“Let us hold fast the confession of our hope without wavering, for he who promised is faithful.  And let us consider how to stir up one another to love and good works, not neglecting to meet together, as is the habit of some, but encouraging one another, and all the more as you see the Day drawing near.” (Hebrews 10:23-25, ESV) Bible Gateway

Overall, a lot of Gospel seed was sown.  Our carolers were able to minister the Gospel to a number of believers in the Sugarland neighborhood.  What a blessing to show the love of our wonderful Lord Jesus during this Christmas season!

P.S. I was personally blessed by the willingness of our photographer, who though being extremely busy in directing the props for our church’s annual Christmas Play the following day, still made time to take several photos for my blog.  Thank you, Shelly!

The Last Safe Place to go Caroling Calvary Temple Sterling VA Outreach

Caroling Calvary Temple Sterling VA Outreach

Caroling Calvary Temple Sterling VA Outreach

I can only remember caroling a couple of times in my life, and both times were awkward exchanges of out-of-tune butchery of popular Christmas Songs.  I think we’ve all seen enough American Idol to realize that there can be a huge gulf between perceived singing ability and actual singing ability.  By the end of the night, all songs were abandoned except for Jingle Bells, and someone’s little brother tried to sneak in the Batman Smells version.

I’ve been a member of Calvary Temple Church in Sterling VA for over 25 years now.  We are passionate about reaching the lost and encouraging the Believers in our community.  We have many Events throughout the year to spread the Gospel. I hope you find the following story to be a blessing.

Caroling always sounded like a good idea until you got out there and discovered:

It was much colder than you expected and singing while your teeth are chattering is not a popular vocal medium.

You don’t actually know all the words to the songs and have to hmmmrmmmher during the tricky parts.

Your friends can’t carry a tune any better than you can so forget relying on Fred to stick to just one key.

People tend to think it’s weird that you are standing on their lawn singing. You’re looking at them singing hmmmmrmmmmher and they’re watching you wondering if this is a new cult that just joined the neighborhood.

You shouldn’t launch into the Twelve Days of Christmas unless you know for sure what all the presents are or your audience has a lot of patience to listen to fifteen minutes of “9 Ducks a Quacking” and “11 Guys a Grilling”.

There is still one safe place where people appreciate the festiveness of Caroling:  The Senior Homes.  I’ve shared with you in the past about the Calvary Temple outreach to the area nursing homes.  For Christmas, our volunteers go all out to spread the love of Jesus with some Christmas Cheer.  Even our Children get involved as they perform parts of their Christmas Pageant for residents of the Sunrise Nursing Home in Sterling, VA.

Caroling with those who could not join the party.

Last month, teams from the church visited the two facilities: Manor Care in Fairfax, VA, and Tall Oaks in Reston, VA.  The mission was to go room to room caroling before having a Group Sing-Along Christmas Party for the residents.  The night they visited Manor Care, the residence was having their annual Christmas Dinner.  As it was, many of the resident’s family members were visiting and were able to join the seniors for the party. The residents loved singing the carols and many of them knew the words by memory.  They probably would have known “7 Sheep a Shearing” is wrong.

After the singing, the teams shared a powerful message about the real meaning of Christmas and the hope we have in Jesus.  We are living in difficult times.  Things we never thought we would see happen are taking place right before our eyes. The Jesus who came to take our sins upon Himself so we could be reconciled to God is coming back for His church very soon.

Afterwards, there was a time of refreshments and fellowship with the residents, many of whom do not usually attend the Bible Studies but came out for the special event.  Then there was a time of sharing one-on-one with the seniors, encouraging them in the Word and praying with them.

Calvary Temple Kids at the Sunrise Nursing Home

Last week we had a sneak preview of the Kid’s practicing for their outreach debut.  Well, the daily preparations have been paying off because they did a wonderful job performing for the seniors of the Sunrise Nursing Home this week.  It was standing room only in the front parlor as the residents packed in to watch the show.

The kids performed several of their Christmas Pageant songs much to the delight of the audience.

Kids at Nursing home

The audience loved them.

The especially loved watching these two ham it up for this number:

After the musical portion of the morning, the kids greeted the seniors one-on-one and handed out tracts and cupcakes.

They told the seniors that Jesus is the true meaning of Christmas.

Calvary Temple also does a Bible Study in the Sunrise Nursing Home on Thursday Nights.  If you or your loved ones are in the facility, you are more than welcome to join us.

And Now … the Surprise!

After the Nursing Home Outreach, the Elementary kids were joined by the High-Schoolers at the Dulles Town Center Mall in Sterling, VA and performed a Christmas Flash Mob.  It’s hard to see just how many of them were there, but they are spread out over a large portion of the food court.  It was a very exciting end to a successful day of joining the kids on their first Christmas Outreach.
