Best Float Award!

I’m very happy to announce that our kids’ hard work in participating in this year’s Leesburg Christmas Parade was rewarded!  Our beautiful float, themed, “Jesus: Born To Die So You May Live,” received the Best Float award by the Kiwanis club of Leesburg!  Read more about it  at Loudoun Now.

Hundreds of people from our church, Calvary Temple, braved the cold weather in order to make the name of Jesus big.

Christmas Parade
Kids Marching in Old Town Leesburg

What a beautiful night this year!  It wasn’t snowy or as cold as last year.    My favorite part in the Leesburg Christmas Parade is always when my church comes by.

The young kids dressed up as the Nativity and enjoyed the 2 mile journey while riding on the float and waving to the many spectators.  Having cared for all these children since they were babies, seeing them all grown up is very sweet for me.

The older kids, along with help from their teachers and many Young Adults, looked sharp in their matching outfits.  The light up gloves, which show very well during the night-time parade, are a crowd favorite.

Having a blast!

Overall, we had a great time this year.  Lord-willing, I’m excited to see what next year will bring!

Easter Resurrection Celebration 2018

Calvary Temple Outreach

Our God is Mighty to Save

I’VE BEEN A MEMBER OF Calvary Temple Church in Sterling VA FOR OVER 25 YEARS. WE ARE PASSIONATE ABOUT REACHING THE LOST AND ENCOURAGING THE BELIEVERS IN OUR COMMUNITY. WE HAVE MANY Events THROUGHOUT THE YEAR TO SPREAD THE GOSPEL. I HOPE YOU FIND THE FOLLOWING TO BE A BLESSING.

Before Easter

Three days before the First Easter, something very special happened: a man named Jesus died on the cross for us.  Three days later, the Son of God rose again from the dead.  He saw His disciples and spoke to over 500 people.  Then, the Bible says He rose into heaven through the clouds.  And one day, He will come again for us.

But the angel said to the women, “Do not be afraid, for I know that you seek Jesus who was crucified. He is not here, for he has risen, as he said. Come, see the place where he lay.” (Matthew 28:5-6, ESV) Bible Gateway

This is the Easter story that many have never heard.  Since the Bible says to, “Go into all the world to preach the Gospel,” my church takes the opportunity every year to invite our local community to celebrate Easter with us.  We call this the, “Kids Easter Resurrection Celebration,” also known as the “ERC.”

In this post, I’ll take you through what it was like and also share some testimonies of lives who were ministered to.

Things To Do

Easter Resurrection CelebrationThere were so many activities this year:  live performances from our elementary students, an interactive story by the Youth Group, and a play by the Young Adults, and of course free food, crafts and games, and moon bounces.

Our elementary kids put on a very nice show, dancing and singing in their brightly colored shirts about our Lord Jesus Christ.

The Youth Group enjoys performing an interactive story in an outside tent that’s nicely lit up.

Easter Resurrection Celebration

Every year, some of the Young Adults perform a skit based on a well-known theme with a message to give your heart to Jesus.  This year, the theme was Willy Wonka.

Easter Resurrection Celebration

Lives Reached

This is my favorite part, the stories about the lives who were touched by the Gospel!  The Lord could have reached them another way, but He chose to use the time at our ERC.

Hope

A wife whose husband unfortunately passed away recently was able to come.  Her husband worked with one of our members, and she is a believer.  Pastor Scott, whose first wife, Janet, passed away from cancer over 15 years ago, was able to share with the wife that life does return to normal in time.  She was very encouraged to be around the people of God, and said that as soon as she came on the property, she felt the love of God.

“By this all people will know that you are my disciples, if you have love for one another.” (John 13:35, ESV) Bible Gateway

Another godly lady from our fellowship was able to comfort the wife with her own experience as well, as a very close friend had passed away in a car accident when she was young.  Since the ERC, these ladies have been in touch.

Excited to Come

My friend, Katie, met a nice young lady at Gold’s Gym.  She’s a believer and very excited about the Lord. Not having kids didn’t deter her from attending an event focused on kids (our ERC).  She came, just wanting to be where God was.

She also visited on a Sunday morning service.  As Katie was practicing with the band (she’s our wonderful pianist!), two of our friends were able to spend time ministering with the young lady.  Another lady, Mrs. Carr, spoke with her.  After service, she gave her money to buy some spiritual books from the church bookstore.

Her job has taken her to Florida.  It’s a blessing the Lord allowed so many of our paths to cross with hers.

Challenged by the Lord’s Return

This is an exciting testimony of how the Lord is drawing a particular man.  For the sake of our story, he is known as Mike.  Mike, who works for a member of our church, was building a deck at a church family’s house. One of their teenage sons, Zach, shared the Gospel with him.  “Man, is that boy a Christian!” Mike said of him to his employer.

Later, Mike and his family attended the ERC.  He said he’s never met so many friendly people.  The Lord is really drawing him.

“And you will hear of wars and rumors of wars. See that you are not alarmed, for this must take place, but the end is not yet.” (Matthew 24:6, ESV) Bible Gateway

Lastly so far, Mike and his cousin attended our Spring Car Show (look for my next post).  They saw 3rd Day Power’s ministry.  Mike was particularly struck by a comment about the recent bombing in Syria.  He was encouraged that the Lord is coming soon.

Overall, lives were ministered to.  Sometimes, the Lord gives us glimpses of how He is working.  I hope these few glimpses encouraged you to keep seeking the Lord with all your heart.  For those who do not yet know the Lord as their Savior, I pray that one day you will.

Born To Die So You May Live – Christmas Parade 2017

Christmas Parade

I’VE BEEN A MEMBER OF Calvary Temple Church in Sterling VA FOR OVER 25 YEARS. WE ARE PASSIONATE ABOUT REACHING THE LOST AND ENCOURAGING THE BELIEVERS IN OUR COMMUNITY. WE HAVE MANY Events THROUGHOUT THE YEAR TO SPREAD THE GOSPEL. I HOPE YOU FIND THE FOLLOWING TO BE A BLESSING.

Making Jesus Big

For the past few years, our church has had the opportunity to participate in the annual Leesburg Christmas parade.  The purpose is to make the name of Jesus big during the Christmas season.

“And I, when I am lifted up from the earth, will draw all people to myself.” (John 12:32, ESV) Bible Gateway

Christmas Parade

Our float and parade participants march 2 miles, from Ida Lee Park to Catoctin Circle in Old Town Leesburg.  Many parents and church members (myself included) join the crowd to support our children and to share the Gospel.

The message for this year’s float was, “Born To Die So You May Live.”

The morning of the parade, we were greeted with small snow flakes that fell gently from a clear white sky.  It was like being in a snow globe!  Beautiful start to the day.  The weather did however worsen, as snow turned to freezing rain.  This did not deter our dedicated team!

Our Christmas Parade

Our team did an excellent job, as always!  I could hear the team’s music before their sign came into view.  Our parade started with a, “Jesus is Lord” sign, to make the Name of Jesus big.

Christmas Parade

It was followed by our Young Adults’ passing out candy and Gospel tracts.

Christmas Parade

Next came the float (shown above), which had some children dressed as the classic Nativity scene.  This was followed by a big white truck with the Gospel message in 1 Corinthians 3:4, 17, that Jesus Christ died for our sins.

Christmas Parade

This was followed by my favorite part, the Youth Group (and others) performing a synchronized marching routine to lively Christmas songs.

Christmas Parade

Our elementary kids came next, dressed as presents and snowflakes.  This was many of our parents’ favorite part, and not a few cameras came out.

Christmas Parade

Our youngest kids rode in a fancy Christmas Train, which kept them nice and warm and saved them the 2 mile walk.

Christmas ParadeChristmas Parade

Our parade was finished off by a, “Merry Christmas” sign.

Christmas Parade

Sharing the Gospel

My church spent the weeks prior to the parade praying, asking Father to draw the people He wanted there so they could hear the Gospel and be saved.  The Young Adults involved in the parade handed out candy and Gospel tracts to the crowd.

Christmas Parade

Those of us in the crowd were also prayerful about using this opportunity to reach the lost.  We came prepared with tracts.

Personally, as I made my way along the wet sidewalks of Old Town Leesburg with my friend Katie from church, I was blessed as at one point everyone we passed by was already holding a tract!  Someone had been very diligent.

Katie and I were able to share with one family in particular.  They were believers new to the area, and the mystery person from my church had already shared with the husband!  The Lord must have really wanted this family to be encouraged.  He is so good to His people.  Meeting the family was a blessing, and we encouraged each other with testimonies of how the Lord provided for us.

Overall, despite the snow, it was obvious that the Lord answered our prayers and drew people to the parade so they could hear the Gospel.  A few families I spoke with said it was the first time they had attended the parade.  Though we may never know the fruit of our efforts, we know the Lord was glorified.

” In the same way, let your light shine before others, so that[they may see your good works and give glory to your Father who is in heaven.” (Matthew 5:16, ESV) Bible Gateway

Special thanks to our photographers for this event, who braved the weather to take beautiful pictures for us!

Reaching Our Neighborhoods – Halloween 2017

Calvary Temple - Pumpkin Crosses

I’VE BEEN A MEMBER OF Calvary Temple Church in Sterling VA FOR OVER 25 YEARS. WE ARE PASSIONATE ABOUT REACHING THE LOST AND ENCOURAGING THE BELIEVERS IN OUR COMMUNITY. WE HAVE MANY Events THROUGHOUT THE YEAR TO SPREAD THE GOSPEL. I HOPE YOU FIND THE FOLLOWING TO BE A BLESSING.

I’m personally excited about this post, to share how my church family has reached our local community during Halloween.  Now, Halloween can be a controversial holiday for many believers, who do not support what’s behind it.  I used to be apprehensive of it myself.  However, the Lord has told us to, “Go into all the world, and preach the gospel,” Mark 16:15.  Now, I see Halloween as a fabulous opportunity to reach people who are literally coming up to my door.

Here are the testimonies of how two ladies and I were able to minister to our neighborhoods this year.

My Neighborhood – How it Started

Three years ago, it was on the heart of one of the young ladies in our Young Adult group at church, Kristy Lawrence, to reach the kids in a neighborhood near church.  Over twenty Young Adults volunteered their time and money to hand out Bible tracts, act out Bible skits, and coordinate games.  Feel free to read more about it here.

Noah

Noah

The outreach opened a huge door in my neighborhood.  One of the young boys who had never heard the Bible story of Noah called it the “Pirate Story” because it had a boat.  Cute!  Since that outreach, I keep a, “Kid Box,” with Bible coloring pages, crayons, balloons, several Children’s Bibles, and bubbles.  Any time the kids want, I’ll bring out the Kid Box, and we’ll color, play a game, or read a Bible story.

When Halloween came around the next year, Kristy Lawrence was unavailable, so I organized the outreach that year.  The theme was a Puppet Show, with performances by our Sunday night service’s Puppet Team.  We were able to reach a lot of kids and parents.

Last year, Kristy Lawrence was available.  Since I had been blessed to steadily minister to the kids in my neighborhood, it was on her heart to move the outreach to a new one.  We decorated our cars for a Trunk or Treat, with seven stories from Creation all the way to the Battle for Your Heart.

My Neighborhood – This Year!

This year, however, neither Kristy Lawrence nor I felt like a big outreach was on our hearts.  Instead, I felt that the Lord would perhaps use more of us at our own houses.

I prayed more than I ever have for the Halloween Outreach this year.

Calvary Temple - Bible Coloring Pages

Calvary Temple - Jesus is the Greatest Treasure signA few weeks before Halloween, I asked a number of ladies from church to specifically pray that the Lord would use the Bible tracts to reach the kids.  Three separate times, the kids in my neighborhood came up and asked to read something!

On the actual night of Halloween, the Lord drew so many kids to my front door that I actually ran out of tracts!  The Lord then reminded me that I had the Bible coloring book, so I quickly tore out some pages and stuffed them in a Ziploc bag with a crayon.  My roommate helped during crunch time, tearing out the pages for me.  So many kids came by that we ran out as fast as we could make them!

One young boy saw the, “Jesus is the Greatest Treasure” sign by my front door.  He said, “Are you a Christian?”  “Yes,” I replied.  “I met a Christian once,” he said.  Then he said he wanted to go to church but couldn’t.  So I encouraged him that, “It’s ok.  God sees.  You can pray to Him.”

Overall, it went very well.  What a blessing to see the hand of God.

Kristy Lawrence’s Neighborhood

Calvary Temple - Kristy's Outreach 2017

This year, it was on Kristy’s heart to reach her own neighborhood.  Her two daughters dressed up in princess gowns, and brought out their cardboard castles as decorations.  Glow necklaces, Bible tracts and candy, and a few games completed her outreach.

Calvary Temple - Don't Be Tricked, Jesus is the Treat!

She was able to reach 80 people, both parents and kids!  A couple of parents made it a point to come back and thank her for what they were doing.  One teenager even said, “This is the best house yet!” after he saw the “Jesus is the Light of the World” sign.

Kristy had been praying for an opportunity to share with a particular neighbor.  She hadn’t seen them since she started praying, but the day before Halloween the Lord allowed their paths to cross.  Kristy had a great opportunity to share.

Stephanie Bright’s Neighborhood

For Stephanie Bright, reaching her neighborhood for Halloween was also a family outreach.  Her three young daughters helped assemble Bible tract pacts with candy.

Calvary Temple - Kids Assembling Tracts

Calvary Temple - Praying for Tracts

Dad praying for Bible tracts with his children

While the Brights did not get any specific opportunities to share the Gospel, they had the highest number of visitors yet!  They also ran out of tracts.  Stephanie ran upstairs to get more candy to meet the high demand!

Before kids started coming, Josh Bright prayed over the tracts with his children.

The girls were excited to hand the tracts out, saying, “Jesus loves you!”  A few people thought this was cute and responded with smiles.  One kid even responded, “Jesus loves you too!”

Overall, our families were very excited to be used by the Lord to reach our local community.  Though full effects of the fruit of this ministry have not yet been seen, we believe that the Lord Jesus is working.  We count it a great privilege to be used, and look forward to what the Lord will do for next year’s Halloween outreach.

They are a lot like Vacation Bible School, but each with a different sports related theme.

Sports skills are honed, but the emphasis is always on the Gospel.

Each day, the kids have memory verses to learn and a Bible lesson is given.

As in past years, the highlight is the Coach’s Corner where each team coach brings spiritual principles and breaks down the Word of God at the team player’s level.

All of our kids are involved in showing the love of Jesus to the campers.  Many of the Coaching Assistants are members of the Calvary Temple Youth Group.

The kids were very open to the gospel message. At last count, out of 115 kids, eleven asked to receive Jesus as their Savior.

On a recent visit to the Loudoun County Juvenile Detention Center, the kids had many questions about Mark’s recent Missions Trip to Africa.  Many of them had been there when the missions team came in and performed skits and gave testimonies, so they were very excited to see how the trip had gone.

Then the topic of discussion transitioned to Hope. Mark had them open to Rom 8:18 – I consider that our present sufferings are not worth comparing with the glory that will be revealed in us.

He explained to them about the Hope we have as Christians. Hope is good as long as it is set on the right things. There is no hope in this world’s treasures. Just look at Hollywood, they have it all and they are miserable.

All of our emptiness inside was made to be filled by God and not other things.

One boy opened up and shared that he was raised in church but hadn’t been living for Christ. He stated that the Lord had gotten his attention in the Detention Center. Now he has been reading his Bible a lot. The Lord is moving in that young man’s life and we are hopeful that eternal changes are happening.

Easter Resurrection Celebration Outreach

Easter Resurrection Celebration

Easter Resurrection Celebration Outreach

Calvary Temple’s Kid’s Easter Resurrection Celebration Outreach was a great success!

I’ve been a member of Calvary Temple Church in Sterling VA for over 25 years now.  We are passionate about reaching the lost and encouraging the Believers in our community.  We have many Events throughout the year to spread the Gospel. I hope you find the following story about the Calvary Temple Easter Resurrection Celebration Outreach to be a blessing.

Easter represents the most important event in Christian History. The death and resurrection of our Lord Jesus Christ.  His death paid for our sins.  His resurrection shows that He conquered death and the grave and its our hope and promise that we will forever live with the Lord.  Through Jesus’ sacrifice, our sins are forgiven and we can have a relationship with God.

Easter Resurrection Celebration Outreach

Most of what the world knows about Easter has to do with the pagan holiday to celebrate spring.  The bunny, the baskets, the jelly beans, and most importantly the Reece’s Peanut Butter Eggs.

At some point, Christians took over the Holiday and said, “hey, why don’t we celebrate the resurrection of the Lord on Easter,” and the Christian holiday was born.  Somehow the two holidays got inner meshed with each other and now we have chocolate crosses and egg hunts after church.

I’m sure a lot of Christians have very strong peanut butter eggsopinions about all of that, but as long as the Peanut Butter Eggs aren’t taken away, I’m not getting involved in the argument. You need to decide what is the best way for your family to honor the Lord.

We chose to have an egg hunt for my 3 year old grandson this year.  My memory is not as good as it used to be.  So it took three adults searching for almost an hour to find the missing eggs that i hid.  Moral of the story: I’m not allowed to hide the eggs anymore.

One exciting thing I did with my granddaughter this year was resurrection eggs.  Each egg has a piece of the story of Jesus’ death and resurrection.  She got to open each egg and i told her what the piece represented.  She’s only four so its hard to say how much she understood. When we went through the pieces again and i asked her what the nails were for she said, “they poked Jesus.”  So a seed was definitely planted.

One way Calvary Temple has chosen to honor the Lord is through community outreach.  Just a few days ago we had a very popular event, our Kids Easter Resurrection Celebration Outreach.  We had over 200 visitors this year and it was a lot of fun for all involved.  It takes many hours of preparation to set up the Easter themed carnival.  Admission is always free and packed with lots of goodies.

Our youth group sets this up like a little theme park ride.  A very low budget theme park ride.  Spectators are taken into stations by the wagon load to costumed actors who perform skits depicting the Bible account of the death and resurrection of Jesus.
