Mighty To Save, Pt. 2 – Calvary Temple Sterling VA Juvenile Detention Center Ministry

rebellious kids

I’ve been a member of Calvary Temple Church in Sterling VA for over 25 years now.  We are passionate about reaching the lost and encouraging the Believers in our community.  We have many Events throughout the year to spread the Gospel.  I hope you find the following story to be a blessing.

My heart breaks for the many youth in our culture who are lost.  Some have grown up in the church and been drawn away by the secret power of lawlessness.  Others have never even heard that Jesus loves them.  They don’t know that they can be free from the bondage of this world.  That they don’t have to be alone and lost anymore.

Last week I shared some of the painful details from my son’s rejection of Jesus and choice to follow after the baser things of this world.  It is a heartbreaking time for us and I only gave you a small glimpse into the battle we’ve been a part of.  But God is faithful to us and His grace is sufficient.  This week I want to talk about one of the ministries of Calvary Temple which focuses on the troubled youth of our community: the outreach in the Loudoun County Juvenile Detention Center.

Volunteers visit the detention center twice a month for Bible study, mentoring and counseling with the kids.  Then a special guest speaker from the ministry visits once a month. Recently God used one of the guest speakers to bring a word that would touch the hearts of many.  The boys were amazed with this man’s testimony and it had a powerful impact on them!  They could not believe how God could use someone with this man’s background in the kingdom.

At the next Bible study, two of the volunteers, Mark and Shelly, had over twenty boys in attendance and they discussed the guest speaker’s testimony.  They shared with the boys that God is looking for people that He can show himself mighty through, that they were all candidates if they could open their hearts to Jesus and let Him in!

Mark started off sharing the parable of the sower .  God is the Sower.  The Word of God is the seed and the condition of man’s heart is represented by the ground the seed falls on.   Then Satan comes immediately to steal the word being shared.  Mark told the kids that they needed Jesus in their hearts and not in their heads.  The wages of our sin is death but God gave us the free gift of salvation so that through believing on and committing to His son Jesus we can be reconciled to Him.  Only then can we receive the ability to do what He asks of us and love Him with all our hearts.

We are broken and lost without Jesus in our hearts.

At the end of the meeting, Mark shared that nothing, no man, no devil could keep them from coming to God but the Lord would not force His way into their hearts.  When they were asked if any of them wanted to receive the free gift of salvation and give their hearts to the Lord, immediately 5-6 hands went up! And by the time Mark had asked their names, 10 hands were up!  Ten souls won for the kingdom from one man’s testimony.
