Sin and Repentance, Pt.1 –

POSTED ON MARCH 10 BY TONY SCHWARTZ

sin and repentance

Sin and Repentance: Those two words can cause quite a stir!  Sin and repentance.  When you think about the word “sin”, at a very high level its talking about doing wrong.  At least, most people would be able to articulate it that way.  Of course, most people don’t like to admit being wrong, so the word “sin” gets replaced with many other words that are more palatable.  I messed up, or I made a mistake…or in some cases, people might say something like “my bad” and try to add some humor to it.  Those are just a couple of examples and there are plenty of others.  Repentance is even worse.  If one is going to repent, it means that they have taken ownership of being wrong and change course so as not to do that wrong again.  Many people see repentance as an ugly word.  Repentance is a beautiful word.

Sin and Repentance: Thank God I can repent for my sins!

As we were winding down our study on “What Does The True Church Look Like” at the Winchester Bible Study, we talked about the aspect of repenting from sin.  I don’t remember exactly what happened, but suddenly we were in a very deep conversation!  As we were talking about sin and repentance, we turned to 2 Corinthians 7:10-11, which reads:

10 For godly sorrow worketh repentance to salvation not to be repented of: but the sorrow of the world worketh death.

11 For behold this selfsame thing, that ye sorrowed after a godly sort, what carefulness it wrought in you, yea, what clearing of yourselves, yea, what indignation, yea, what fear, yea, what vehement desire, yea, what zeal, yea, what revenge! In all things ye have approved yourselves to be clear in this matter.

The group suddenly became very animated and were asking questions faster than we could answer them!  “What is godly sorrow?  What does it mean that it works repentance to salvation?  What does it mean ‘not to be repented of’?  What is the sorrow of the world?  What does it mean when it says it works death?”  It got even more intense after we read verse 11!  I remember getting into the car to drive home after the meeting and my wife and I looked at one another and asked at the same time, “What just happened!”  We ended up taking a couple of sessions to work through these two verses, defining each word and going to other scriptures to discuss the topic in a more full manner.

what is sin

Before we answered all of those questions, we stepped back and asked “What is sin?”  The group became thoughtful and then began offering up definitions.  One defined it as we did above, doing wrong.  Another brought out the aspect that it isn’t just wrong that we commit, but also not doing things we’re supposed to do.  We shared with them that the word used in the Bible translated into our English word, sin, means “to miss the mark.”  We also see from 1 John 3:4 that sin is transgression of the Law.  Looking at 1 John 5:17, we see that all unrighteousness is sin.  The last reference we used to help bring an understanding of what sin is was from James 4:17, which states:

17 Therefore to him that knoweth to do good, and doeth it not, to him it is sin.

In the end, God is the one who says what is right and what is wrong.  He gave us His Word and by it we know what God says is sin.  This really seemed to hit home with everyone.  It was very beneficial to see what God says is sin and how He views it.  When we can begin to understand even just a little what sin is to God, it helps change our own perspective of it and should cause us to develop a deeper hatred for sin, both in ourselves and in others.

h8 sin

In our next post, we’ll get more into repentance and then we’ll delve into the definitions for each of the words from 2 Corinthians 7:10-11.  Until then, I would encourage you to get before the Lord and honestly ask Him to reveal in you what displeases Him.  He will be faithful to show you AND to help you repent (change course) and hate the sin as He does!

Our God Saves

Our God Saves

I’ve been a member of Calvary Temple Church in Sterling VA for over 25 years now.  We are passionate about reaching the lost and encouraging the Believers in our community.  We have many Events throughout the year to spread the Gospel. I hope you find the following story to be a blessing.

Whenever we sing this song in Worship it makes me cry when we get to the title phrase.  I have so many people in my life who are not saved and this song is so encouraging every time the Lord brings it up.  It brings me peace that no matter how bleak the situation looks, God is in control and He has done all that was needed to save our loved ones.

Our God Saves

Our God saves, our God saves. There is hope in Your name. Mourning turns to songs of praise. Our God saves, our God saves

I read a devotional recently that encouraged the following:

God Patiently Loves Even Prodigals

When you are grieving over a “lost” child, check him or her for pulse and respiration. If they are alive, there is hope. God takes the long view, and he is patient, patient, patient. He waits and waits, watching for opportunity.

Eventually, even angry rebels burn out, because every force that is not from God sooner or later turns destructive. Every force that is not from God will cause brokenness and fear, not contentment.

Jesus told a timeless tale about a father with two sons–a “good” one and a “bad” one. The bad one took his inheritance early and squandered it. In friendless poverty he came to his senses and asked his father for mercy.

Here is hope for all prodigals, and it is true for the prodigals in your own family too. Jesus’ forgiveness is big enough to cover every one of the sins of youthful rebels. While they live, there’s time and there’s hope: “The LORD is compassionate and gracious, slow to anger, abounding in love. He does not treat us as our sins deserve or repay us according to our iniquities” (Psalm 103:8,10).  Taken from Fear Not: Devotions From Time of Grace

Be encouraged today that Our God Saves.  He has a plan to save your family and you need only to Be Still and trust Him.

The Last Safe Place to go Caroling Calvary Temple Sterling VA Outreach

Caroling Calvary Temple Sterling VA Outreach

Caroling Calvary Temple Sterling VA Outreach

I can only remember caroling a couple of times in my life, and both times were awkward exchanges of out-of-tune butchery of popular Christmas Songs.  I think we’ve all seen enough American Idol to realize that there can be a huge gulf between perceived singing ability and actual singing ability.  By the end of the night, all songs were abandoned except for Jingle Bells, and someone’s little brother tried to sneak in the Batman Smells version.

I’ve been a member of Calvary Temple Church in Sterling VA for over 25 years now.  We are passionate about reaching the lost and encouraging the Believers in our community.  We have many Events throughout the year to spread the Gospel. I hope you find the following story to be a blessing.

Caroling always sounded like a good idea until you got out there and discovered:

It was much colder than you expected and singing while your teeth are chattering is not a popular vocal medium.

You don’t actually know all the words to the songs and have to hmmmrmmmher during the tricky parts.

Your friends can’t carry a tune any better than you can so forget relying on Fred to stick to just one key.

People tend to think it’s weird that you are standing on their lawn singing. You’re looking at them singing hmmmmrmmmmher and they’re watching you wondering if this is a new cult that just joined the neighborhood.

You shouldn’t launch into the Twelve Days of Christmas unless you know for sure what all the presents are or your audience has a lot of patience to listen to fifteen minutes of “9 Ducks a Quacking” and “11 Guys a Grilling”.

There is still one safe place where people appreciate the festiveness of Caroling:  The Senior Homes.  I’ve shared with you in the past about the Calvary Temple outreach to the area nursing homes.  For Christmas, our volunteers go all out to spread the love of Jesus with some Christmas Cheer.  Even our Children get involved as they perform parts of their Christmas Pageant for residents of the Sunrise Nursing Home in Sterling, VA.

Caroling with those who could not join the party.

Last month, teams from the church visited the two facilities: Manor Care in Fairfax, VA, and Tall Oaks in Reston, VA.  The mission was to go room to room caroling before having a Group Sing-Along Christmas Party for the residents.  The night they visited Manor Care, the residence was having their annual Christmas Dinner.  As it was, many of the resident’s family members were visiting and were able to join the seniors for the party. The residents loved singing the carols and many of them knew the words by memory.  They probably would have known “7 Sheep a Shearing” is wrong.

After the singing, the teams shared a powerful message about the real meaning of Christmas and the hope we have in Jesus.  We are living in difficult times.  Things we never thought we would see happen are taking place right before our eyes. The Jesus who came to take our sins upon Himself so we could be reconciled to God is coming back for His church very soon.

Afterwards, there was a time of refreshments and fellowship with the residents, many of whom do not usually attend the Bible Studies but came out for the special event.  Then there was a time of sharing one-on-one with the seniors, encouraging them in the Word and praying with them.

Calvary Temple Kids at the Sunrise Nursing Home

Calvary Temple Kids at the Sunrise Nursing Home

Last week we had a sneak preview of the Kid’s practicing for their outreach debut.  Well, the daily preparations have been paying off because they did a wonderful job performing for the seniors of the Sunrise Nursing Home this week.  It was standing room only in the front parlor as the residents packed in to watch the show.

The kids performed several of their Christmas Pageant songs much to the delight of the audience.

Kids at Nursing home

The audience loved them.

The especially loved watching these two ham it up for this number:

After the musical portion of the morning, the kids greeted the seniors one-on-one and handed out tracts and cupcakes.

They told the seniors that Jesus is the true meaning of Christmas.

The kids did a great job of reaching out to the residents and showing the love of God.  And as you can see, the residents were very receptive to the children’s visit.

Calvary Temple also does a Bible Study in the Sunrise Nursing Home on Thursday Nights.  If you or your loved ones are in the facility, you are more than welcome to join us.

And Now … the Surprise!

After the Nursing Home Outreach, the Elementary kids were joined by the High-Schoolers at the Dulles Town Center Mall in Sterling, VA and performed a Christmas Flash Mob.  It’s hard to see just how many of them were there, but they are spread out over a large portion of the food court.  It was a very exciting end to a successful day of joining the kids on their first Christmas Outreach.
