Spring Car & Motorcycle Show 2018

Car Show

I HAVE BEEN A MEMBER OF Calvary Temple Church in Sterling VA FOR OVER 25 YEARS. WE ARE PASSIONATE ABOUT REACHING THE LOST AND ENCOURAGING THE BELIEVERS IN OUR COMMUNITY. WE HAVE MANY Events THROUGHOUT THE YEAR TO SPREAD THE GOSPEL. I HOPE YOU FIND THE FOLLOWING TO BE A BLESSING.

Car Show

We were blessed with a beautiful spring day for our Car and Motorcycle show on April 14, 2018!  Over 500 visitors attended, and 270 participants brought the show to life with a wide variety of colorful cars, trucks, and motorcycles.

If you missed it, feel free to check out our You Tube highlights.

Many volunteers from our church provided free water, food, and children’s activities.  One attendee asked why we gave away so much for free.  The response?  “Because we want to share the Gospel.”  The man replied, “And you guys do that really well too!”

“37 Then he said to his disciples, ‘The harvest is plentiful, but the laborers are few; 38 therefore pray earnestly to the Lord of the harvest to send out laborers into his harvest.'” (Matthew 9:36-37, ESV) Bible Gateway

Third Day Power Ministries

Perhaps the most exciting activity was a special appearance from Third Day Power ministries, by Ray and Jannet Clark.  Jannet is one of the strongest women in the world, able to bench press 345 pounds!  Ray and Jannet travel, performing feats of strength and sharing the gospel of Jesus Christ.

Below, Jannet asked one of our strongest young men, Stephen Spriggs, to tear a phone book in half.  Though unsuccessful, he had fun.

Next, Jannet performed the same feat, this time successfully.

Her husband, Ray Clark, broke a wooden bat over his thigh and then turned it into a cross.

The couple then shared their testimonies and a powerful gospel message.  One Muslim attendee said the message changed his life, and he would never be the same.

“And I, when I am lifted up from the earth, will draw all people to myself.” (John 12:32, ESV) Bible Gateway

Rev Your Rumble

Car Show

This was a loud event!  The “Rev Your Rumble” contest measured the contestants’ decibels when their engines were revved.  The cars went individually, revving their engines which were measured by a decibel meter.  The winner was chosen by the crowd’s applause.

Fun Displays

Some car owners’s displays were fun and creative.  I liked the mini car, the road runner, and the coyote duster.

Easter Resurrection Celebration 2018

Calvary Temple Outreach

Our God is Mighty to Save

I’VE BEEN A MEMBER OF Calvary Temple Church in Sterling VA FOR OVER 25 YEARS. WE ARE PASSIONATE ABOUT REACHING THE LOST AND ENCOURAGING THE BELIEVERS IN OUR COMMUNITY. WE HAVE MANY Events THROUGHOUT THE YEAR TO SPREAD THE GOSPEL. I HOPE YOU FIND THE FOLLOWING TO BE A BLESSING.

Before Easter

Three days before the First Easter, something very special happened: a man named Jesus died on the cross for us.  Three days later, the Son of God rose again from the dead.  He saw His disciples and spoke to over 500 people.  Then, the Bible says He rose into heaven through the clouds.  And one day, He will come again for us.

But the angel said to the women, “Do not be afraid, for I know that you seek Jesus who was crucified. He is not here, for he has risen, as he said. Come, see the place where he lay.” (Matthew 28:5-6, ESV) Bible Gateway

This is the Easter story that many have never heard.  Since the Bible says to, “Go into all the world to preach the Gospel,” my church takes the opportunity every year to invite our local community to celebrate Easter with us.  We call this the, “Kids Easter Resurrection Celebration,” also known as the “ERC.”

In this post, I’ll take you through what it was like and also share some testimonies of lives who were ministered to.

Things To Do

Easter Resurrection CelebrationThere were so many activities this year:  live performances from our elementary students, an interactive story by the Youth Group, and a play by the Young Adults, and of course free food, crafts and games, and moon bounces.

Our elementary kids put on a very nice show, dancing and singing in their brightly colored shirts about our Lord Jesus Christ.

The Youth Group enjoys performing an interactive story in an outside tent that’s nicely lit up.

Easter Resurrection Celebration

Every year, some of the Young Adults perform a skit based on a well-known theme with a message to give your heart to Jesus.  This year, the theme was Willy Wonka.

Lives Reached

This is my favorite part, the stories about the lives who were touched by the Gospel!  The Lord could have reached them another way, but He chose to use the time at our ERC.

Hope

A wife whose husband unfortunately passed away recently was able to come.  Her husband worked with one of our members, and she is a believer.  Pastor Scott, whose first wife, Janet, passed away from cancer over 15 years ago, was able to share with the wife that life does return to normal in time.  She was very encouraged to be around the people of God, and said that as soon as she came on the property, she felt the love of God.

“By this all people will know that you are my disciples, if you have love for one another.” (John 13:35, ESV) Bible Gateway

Another godly lady from our fellowship was able to comfort the wife with her own experience as well, as a very close friend had passed away in a car accident when she was young.  Since the ERC, these ladies have been in touch.

Excited to Come

My friend, Katie, met a nice young lady at Gold’s Gym.  She’s a believer and very excited about the Lord. Not having kids didn’t deter her from attending an event focused on kids (our ERC).  She came, just wanting to be where God was.

She also visited on a Sunday morning service.  As Katie was practicing with the band (she’s our wonderful pianist!), two of our friends were able to spend time ministering with the young lady.  Another lady, Mrs. Carr, spoke with her.  After service, she gave her money to buy some spiritual books from the church bookstore.

Her job has taken her to Florida.  It’s a blessing the Lord allowed so many of our paths to cross with hers.

Challenged by the Lord’s Return

This is an exciting testimony of how the Lord is drawing a particular man.  For the sake of our story, he is known as Mike.  Mike, who works for a member of our church, was building a deck at a church family’s house. One of their teenage sons, Zach, shared the Gospel with him.  “Man, is that boy a Christian!” Mike said of him to his employer.

Later, Mike and his family attended the ERC.  He said he’s never met so many friendly people.  The Lord is really drawing him.

“And you will hear of wars and rumors of wars. See that you are not alarmed, for this must take place, but the end is not yet.” (Matthew 24:6, ESV) Bible Gateway

Lastly so far, Mike and his cousin attended our Spring Car Show (look for my next post).  They saw 3rd Day Power’s ministry.  Mike was particularly struck by a comment about the recent bombing in Syria.  He was encouraged that the Lord is coming soon.

Overall, lives were ministered to.  Sometimes, the Lord gives us glimpses of how He is working.  I hope these few glimpses encouraged you to keep seeking the Lord with all your heart.  For those who do not yet know the Lord as their Savior, I pray that one day you will.

Christmas Caroling

Caroling 1

I’VE BEEN A MEMBER OF Calvary Temple Church in Sterling VA FOR OVER 25 YEARS. WE ARE PASSIONATE ABOUT REACHING THE LOST AND ENCOURAGING THE BELIEVERS IN OUR COMMUNITY. WE HAVE MANY Events THROUGHOUT THE YEAR TO SPREAD THE GOSPEL. I HOPE YOU FIND THE FOLLOWING TO BE A BLESSING.

Christmas Carolers

Can a Christmas season ever truly be complete without caroling?  I think not!  It was strongly on the hearts of one of our men, Mark, to gather a group of carolers so they could share the love of Jesus this year.  A number of our families, choir and band members, and Young Adults were able to minister in this manner last Saturday.

And he said to them, “Go into all the world and proclaim the gospel to the whole creation.” (Mark 16:15, ESV) Bible Gateway

Despite the cold weather, the group met at Mark’s house for brief instructions and received a red or green caroling booklet with the lyrics to Christmas songs.

Caroling Prep

The carolers headed out as one large group, and broke into small groups of two or three as neighbors wanted to talk.

Carolers

Jane

Carolers with Neighbor

Kristy, Jane, and Lindsay

A highlight of the night was how the Lord ordered their steps to meet another strong believer, a glamorous, godly woman named Jane.  After our carolers stopped by her house, a couple Young Adult ladies, Kristy and Lindsay, stayed behind to fellowship with Jane.  They learned that Jane was a believer whose husband was an evangelist!  They traveled the world sharing the Gospel.  Jane took a job at the CIA, and her husband kept traveling to share the Gospel.  Unfortunately, he passed away several weeks ago.

My friend, Lindsay, was able to meet with her neighbor, Jane, again today.  They fellowshipped for a while, and Jane shared how she used to teach teenagers about the Lord.  Lindsay was very encouraged to see Jane’s Bible and an E. M. Bounds book on Prayer in the house.  Lindsay was also blessed to see a picture of a family in the Philippines that Jane and her husband used to pray for.

Isn’t it wonderful how the Lord orders our steps?  Jane, Lindsay, and Kristy were very encouraged to meet each other.  Who knows what good fruit will come from the carolers willingness to go out on a cold night to preach the Gospel?

“Let us hold fast the confession of our hope without wavering, for he who promised is faithful.  And let us consider how to stir up one another to love and good works, not neglecting to meet together, as is the habit of some, but encouraging one another, and all the more as you see the Day drawing near.” (Hebrews 10:23-25, ESV) Bible Gateway

Overall, a lot of Gospel seed was sown.  Our carolers were able to minister the Gospel to a number of believers in the Sugarland neighborhood.  What a blessing to show the love of our wonderful Lord Jesus during this Christmas season!

P.S. I was personally blessed by the willingness of our photographer, who though being extremely busy in directing the props for our church’s annual Christmas Play the following day, still made time to take several photos for my blog.  Thank you, Shelly!

Reaching Our Neighborhoods – Halloween 2017

Calvary Temple - Pumpkin Crosses

I’VE BEEN A MEMBER OF Calvary Temple Church in Sterling VA FOR OVER 25 YEARS. WE ARE PASSIONATE ABOUT REACHING THE LOST AND ENCOURAGING THE BELIEVERS IN OUR COMMUNITY. WE HAVE MANY Events THROUGHOUT THE YEAR TO SPREAD THE GOSPEL. I HOPE YOU FIND THE FOLLOWING TO BE A BLESSING.

I’m personally excited about this post, to share how my church family has reached our local community during Halloween.  Now, Halloween can be a controversial holiday for many believers, who do not support what’s behind it.  I used to be apprehensive of it myself.  However, the Lord has told us to, “Go into all the world, and preach the gospel,” Mark 16:15.  Now, I see Halloween as a fabulous opportunity to reach people who are literally coming up to my door.

Here are the testimonies of how two ladies and I were able to minister to our neighborhoods this year.

My Neighborhood – How it Started

Three years ago, it was on the heart of one of the young ladies in our Young Adult group at church, Kristy Lawrence, to reach the kids in a neighborhood near church.  Over twenty Young Adults volunteered their time and money to hand out Bible tracts, act out Bible skits, and coordinate games.  Feel free to read more about it here.

Noah

Noah

The outreach opened a huge door in my neighborhood.  One of the young boys who had never heard the Bible story of Noah called it the “Pirate Story” because it had a boat.  Cute!  Since that outreach, I keep a, “Kid Box,” with Bible coloring pages, crayons, balloons, several Children’s Bibles, and bubbles.  Any time the kids want, I’ll bring out the Kid Box, and we’ll color, play a game, or read a Bible story.

When Halloween came around the next year, Kristy Lawrence was unavailable, so I organized the outreach that year.  The theme was a Puppet Show, with performances by our Sunday night service’s Puppet Team.  We were able to reach a lot of kids and parents.

Last year, Kristy Lawrence was available.  Since I had been blessed to steadily minister to the kids in my neighborhood, it was on her heart to move the outreach to a new one.  We decorated our cars for a Trunk or Treat, with seven stories from Creation all the way to the Battle for Your Heart.

My Neighborhood – This Year!

This year, however, neither Kristy Lawrence nor I felt like a big outreach was on our hearts.  Instead, I felt that the Lord would perhaps use more of us at our own houses.

I prayed more than I ever have for the Halloween Outreach this year.

Calvary Temple - Bible Coloring Pages

Calvary Temple - Jesus is the Greatest Treasure signA few weeks before Halloween, I asked a number of ladies from church to specifically pray that the Lord would use the Bible tracts to reach the kids.  Three separate times, the kids in my neighborhood came up and asked to read something!

On the actual night of Halloween, the Lord drew so many kids to my front door that I actually ran out of tracts!  The Lord then reminded me that I had the Bible coloring book, so I quickly tore out some pages and stuffed them in a Ziploc bag with a crayon.  My roommate helped during crunch time, tearing out the pages for me.  So many kids came by that we ran out as fast as we could make them!

One young boy saw the, “Jesus is the Greatest Treasure” sign by my front door.  He said, “Are you a Christian?”  “Yes,” I replied.  “I met a Christian once,” he said.  Then he said he wanted to go to church but couldn’t.  So I encouraged him that, “It’s ok.  God sees.  You can pray to Him.”

Overall, it went very well.  What a blessing to see the hand of God.

Kristy Lawrence’s Neighborhood

Calvary Temple - Kristy's Outreach 2017

This year, it was on Kristy’s heart to reach her own neighborhood.  Her two daughters dressed up in princess gowns, and brought out their cardboard castles as decorations.  Glow necklaces, Bible tracts and candy, and a few games completed her outreach.

Calvary Temple - Don't Be Tricked, Jesus is the Treat!

She was able to reach 80 people, both parents and kids!  A couple of parents made it a point to come back and thank her for what they were doing.  One teenager even said, “This is the best house yet!” after he saw the “Jesus is the Light of the World” sign.

Kristy had been praying for an opportunity to share with a particular neighbor.  She hadn’t seen them since she started praying, but the day before Halloween the Lord allowed their paths to cross.  Kristy had a great opportunity to share.

Stephanie Bright’s Neighborhood

For Stephanie Bright, reaching her neighborhood for Halloween was also a family outreach.  Her three young daughters helped assemble Bible tract pacts with candy.

Calvary Temple - Kids Assembling Tracts

Calvary Temple - Praying for Tracts

Dad praying for Bible tracts with his children

While the Brights did not get any specific opportunities to share the Gospel, they had the highest number of visitors yet!  They also ran out of tracts.  Stephanie ran upstairs to get more candy to meet the high demand!

Before kids started coming, Josh Bright prayed over the tracts with his children.

The girls were excited to hand the tracts out, saying, “Jesus loves you!”  A few people thought this was cute and responded with smiles.  One kid even responded, “Jesus loves you too!”

Overall, our families were very excited to be used by the Lord to reach our local community.  Though full effects of the fruit of this ministry have not yet been seen, we believe that the Lord Jesus is working.  We count it a great privilege to be used, and look forward to what the Lord will do for next year’s Halloween outreach.

The first drive in movie I ever saw was The Cat from Outer Space.  The window speaker barely worked, it was hot and muggy, I got eaten up by mosquitoes, and it was awesome!  Back in the late seventies when I was growing up, movie theaters had two screens and two times.  Sevenish and Nineish.  Options were limited.  But then we also only had four channels on the TV so we weren’t picky yet.  Going to a movie was an event and staying up late to watch a huge movie screen outside – in the dark – with popcorn and candy – when you should be home in bed – was epic.

The drive in theater left such a big impression on me and my little brother that we used to sit in the closet with cereal and a flashlight and pretend we were at the movies.  70’s kids didn’t have a lot of perks, but we had IMAGINATION!

There are still a few drive in theaters left in the United States so they’re not exactly extinct but they are a dying breed.  So there is something very special and exciting for me when Calvary Temple hosts our annual Gospel Movie Night out on the lawn.

This year the movie was Do You Believe.

Don’t Lose Hope – Our God is Mighty to Save

One of my favorite Christian writers is Charles Spurgeon. I have often been blessed by his teachings and God has used them to encourage and deliver me many times. I have children who are not serving the Lord, so this is one his writings that particularly blesses me.

I’ve been a member of Calvary Temple Church in Sterling VA for over 25 years now.  We are passionate about reaching the lost and encouraging the Believers in our community.  We have many Events throughout the year to spread the Gospel. I hope you find the following  to be a blessing.

Mighty to Save

Zephaniah 3:17 – The LORD your God is with you, he is mighty to save. He will take great delight in you, he will quiet you with his love, he will rejoice over you with singing.”

By the words “to save” we understand the whole of the great work of salvation, from the first holy desire onward to complete sanctification. The words are multum in parro: indeed, here is all mercy in one word. Christ is not only “mighty to save” those who repent, but he is able to make men repent. He will carry those to heaven who believe; but he is, moreover, mighty to give men new hearts and to work faith in them. He is mighty to make the man who hates holiness love it, and to constrain the despiser of his name to bend the knee before him.

Nay, this is not all the meaning, for the divine power is equally seen in the after-work. The life of a believer is a series of miracles wrought by “the Mighty God.” The bush burns, but is not consumed. He is mighty to keep his people holy after he has made them so, and to preserve them in his fear and love until he consummates their spiritual existence in heaven. Christ’s might doth not lie in making a believer and then leaving him to shift for himself; but he who begins the good work carries it on; he who imparts the first germ of life in the dead soul, prolongs the divine existence, and strengthens it until it bursts asunder every bond of sin, and the soul leaps from earth, perfected in glory.

Believer, here is encouragement.

Art thou praying for some beloved one? Oh, give not up thy prayers, for Christ is “mighty to save.” You are powerless to reclaim the rebel, but your Lord is Almighty.

Lay hold on that mighty arm, and rouse it to put forth its strength. Does your own case trouble you? Fear not, for his strength is sufficient for you. Whether to begin with others, or to carry on the work in you, Jesus is “mighty to save;” the best proof of which lies in the fact that he has saved you. What a thousand mercies that you have not found him mighty to destroy!

Our God Saves

Our God Saves

I’ve been a member of Calvary Temple Church in Sterling VA for over 25 years now.  We are passionate about reaching the lost and encouraging the Believers in our community.  We have many Events throughout the year to spread the Gospel. I hope you find the following story to be a blessing.

Whenever we sing this song in Worship it makes me cry when we get to the title phrase.  I have so many people in my life who are not saved and this song is so encouraging every time the Lord brings it up.  It brings me peace that no matter how bleak the situation looks, God is in control and He has done all that was needed to save our loved ones.

Our God Saves

Our God saves, our God saves. There is hope in Your name. Mourning turns to songs of praise. Our God saves, our God saves

I read a devotional recently that encouraged the following:

God Patiently Loves Even Prodigals

When you are grieving over a “lost” child, check him or her for pulse and respiration. If they are alive, there is hope. God takes the long view, and he is patient, patient, patient. He waits and waits, watching for opportunity.

Eventually, even angry rebels burn out, because every force that is not from God sooner or later turns destructive. Every force that is not from God will cause brokenness and fear, not contentment.

Jesus told a timeless tale about a father with two sons–a “good” one and a “bad” one. The bad one took his inheritance early and squandered it. In friendless poverty he came to his senses and asked his father for mercy.

Here is hope for all prodigals, and it is true for the prodigals in your own family too. Jesus’ forgiveness is big enough to cover every one of the sins of youthful rebels. While they live, there’s time and there’s hope: “The LORD is compassionate and gracious, slow to anger, abounding in love. He does not treat us as our sins deserve or repay us according to our iniquities” (Psalm 103:8,10).  Taken from Fear Not: Devotions From Time of Grace

Be encouraged today that Our God Saves.  He has a plan to save your family and you need only to Be Still and trust Him.

Backyard Plays and Backstage Secrets Pt. 1 – The Drama Team of Calvary Temple Sterling VA

outdoor theater

I’ve been a member of Calvary Temple Church in Sterling VA for over 25 years now.  We are passionate about reaching the lost and encouraging the Believers in our community.  We have many Events throughout the year to spread the Gospel.  I hope you find the following story to be a blessing.

I grew up putting on plays in the backyard with my friends.  The kind where you make up the script as you go along.  And your grandparents sit patiently enduring it and clap at the end like you just nailed the lead in Macbeth.  One such play involved re-enacting the musical numbers from the movie Grease.  It included a lot of awkward dance moves and some mid-production arguing on who got to play the lead of Sandy.  It was my record [a round disc that played music in the olden days] so I was convinced it should be me.  Naturally.

My love of the theater continued into High School where I tried out for the Spring Musical Production of West Side Story.  My audition went so well I was immediately  cast as the girl who sits as far away from the stage as possible and runs the spotlight from the back.  Thus began my career backstage.  No one claps for the lights but they sure notice when they’re not there.  I do however get to surprise people from time to time with the fact that I have a Varsity Letter.  In Theater.  For Stage Crew.  It doesn’t sound as exciting when you spell it all out like that.

West-Side-Story

When the day came that I was asked to be a part of a drama team to put on plays for the congregation at Calvary Temple you can imagine I was thrilled.  You would be imagining wrong.  I actually said, “No, I’d rather stay home and watch the Nanny on TV.” But then God doesn’t take no for an answer so my acting days were resurrected.  I was placed on the writing team to develop a script called Matthew Mugglebee’s Miracle Cures.  It’s a play about the error of looking to worldly methods to cure spiritual problems.  Soon after Matthew Mugglebee we discovered that we needed girls to play the female roles.  Shakespeare would roll over in his grave.

happily ever after

Original Production on Relationships – Happily Ever After

Thus began my public acting debut.  My acting ability hasn’t improved much from the backyard but now my audience can’t escape to answer the phone which I know wasn’t really ringing Grandma! Our audience is very gracious.  Or their standards are really low  – we’re not really sure which is the case but we’re grateful anyway. Some of our performances are live on stage and some are pre-recorded for the internet.  Using a green screen and pre recording a scene is always an interesting challenge.  And those lights are HOT!  We have to reapply makeup a lot.

wiz green screen

Its an honor to present Biblical principles in such a creative way.  We had other churches around the country request some of our scripts and we’ve been thrilled to share them.   Most of our plays are for the edification of the body of Christ but a few of our shorter skits have a salvation message.  Here is one of our favorites.  It’s part of a series of “rejected skit ideas” called “That will never work”.

Backstage Secrets

If you’re still with me I’ll let you in on a few things the audience doesn’t always know about.

Because we are Christians and can’t undress backstage we have to wear an extra layer of clothes or a body suit under our costumes.

Costume changes backstage usually involve multiple people dressing you and shoving props into your hands – sometimes while you’re walking  towards the curtain to go back on.  Timing is everything.

I once had about 10 quick changes with back to back scenes removing one layer at a time backstage.  We had a wardrobe malfunction and several shirts came off at once so three people were jamming blouses back on me so i could get on stage.

When the actors are on stage saying lines – someone is backstage moving around to match their movements to feed lines through the backdrop if they go blank.

Some of our best gags were accidents that only happened during the final performance and the actors just rolled with it.

Actors cover for each other on stage all the time.  We say each others lines when someone goes blank, we improvise the scene to get them back on track, and we ad-lib to keep the scene moving.

There is an entire choreographed ballet happening backstage during scene changes.  Actors are ducking, flattened against the wall, jammed into the corners or moving with the backdrop to stay hidden.

Sometimes actors miss their cue to go onstage and are literally pushed out by other actors.

If there is music playing on stage – there is dancing happening backstage.

Basketball, Cheerleading and Soccer – Oh My! Calvary Temple Sports Camps

I’ve been a member of Calvary Temple Church in Sterling VA for over 25 years now.  We are passionate about reaching the lost and encouraging the Believers in our community.  We have many Events throughout the year to spread the Gospel.  I hope you find the following story to be a blessing.

When I was a kid and had summers off from school my parents had one goal: to get me out of the house.  Every day I was commanded to “go outside and play!”  My mom didn’t ask where I was going or who I’d be with.  As long as I was home by dark and didn’t have any broken bones the day was a success.  Times have changed and kids don’t spend as much time running around the neighborhood anymore.  Today’s kid has long-term goals.  I don’t think my generation planned much past what was on television that week.  Now they have organized activities, scheduled play dates and summer skills camps.

When I was nine years old we lived in an apartment complex with other low-income families.  A local church had a bus ministry that went around and invited kids to Sunday School and Children’s Church.  Sunday morning with no kids at home – my mom couldn’t jump at that offer fast enough.  She may have given a special offering to have the bus driver take the long way home.

Church Buses

It was the first time in my life that I heard about Jesus from someone other than my grandmother.  I remember being told that “All have sinned and fallen short of the glory of God” – Romans 8:23.   Maybe I was an especially naughty nine year old but I had no trouble believing that I was a sinner.  And when we were asked if we wanted to receive Jesus in our hearts that day I raised my hand.

One of the ministry workers split us up so each child could get one-on-one attention with a teacher to read the scriptures about salvation and pray.  My teacher gave me a little white Bible with a zipper.  I got born again that day at eight years old on an empty school bus at a church I don’t remember with a teacher whose name I’ve never known.  One day in heaven I will be able to thank her.

Shortly after I was born again my whole family got saved and we moved to another state.  As far as I know the church never knew that they were responsible for the salvation of four people through that little bus ministry.  They were just being obedient to spread the gospel in their community.  Here at Calvary Temple we have many events designed to spread the gospel in our community.

One of our most popular outreach events is our summer Sports Camps. We start inviting families to our Basketball, Cheerleading and Soccer Camps in the spring.  Even our youth group gets involved as we hand out over twelve thousand flyers and tracts door-to-door.  If you live in the Sterling area you know what I’m talking about!

sports camp flyerOur congregation works very hard to prepare for the event so that everything will run smoothly for our visitors.  Many people take off time from their jobs so they can help prepare the fields, courts and equipment.  They help with the registration table and parent’s hospitality station.  Some take vacation time so they can be available to coach the kids or visit with the parents.

Each day camp opens with a word of prayer then a time of ministry.  It could be a skit performed by our youth group, a game that teaches a bible lesson or a guest speaker will share their testimony with the kids.  Then its time to review the scripture of the day.  After that the kids are split up into their teams and spend the next two hours going through their stations.  Each station teaches a various aspect of that sport – offense, defense, dribbling, passing.  I don’t know what any of these things mean so thank God I am not a coach!  If we ever have a baking camp I am your girl.  You will find me at the frosting station.

Then there will be a scrimmage where the kids get to put their new skills into play. At the end of the day the coaches review the scripture of the day one more time then give out the daily awards.  We like to give out awards so there will be a lot of them. A lot.   Each camper gets a t-shirt on Monday that volunteers take care of and wash each day when they leave. On Friday, the kids take them home as souvenirs.  Each day the kids also get memory verse cards with a story and Bible message to take home.

On Friday, we ask the parents to stay for lunch and give out the weekly awards.  Did I mention how much we like awards?  This is a great opportunity for the parents to spend time with the coaches and volunteers and get caught up on the highlights of the week.  The whole purpose for the sports camps is to share the gospel and present the love of Jesus to the kids and families in our community.  The kids get to have a great time and learn some skills for basketball, cheerleading and soccer in the process.

Our attendance is growing.  This year we had more kids than ever before.

  • Basketball Camp – 160 kids
  • cheerleading Camp – 45  kids
  • Soccer Camp – 218 kids

That’s a lot of seed sown for the kingdom.  The coaches had opportunity to pray with several of the kids.  I wonder how many of those kids will be born again and look back on our little sports camp ministry as the first time they heard the gospel of Jesus.  I wish I could give each one of them a little zippered Bible.
