Easter Resurrection Celebration 2018

Calvary Temple Outreach

Our God is Mighty to Save

I’VE BEEN A MEMBER OF Calvary Temple Church in Sterling VA FOR OVER 25 YEARS. WE ARE PASSIONATE ABOUT REACHING THE LOST AND ENCOURAGING THE BELIEVERS IN OUR COMMUNITY. WE HAVE MANY Events THROUGHOUT THE YEAR TO SPREAD THE GOSPEL. I HOPE YOU FIND THE FOLLOWING TO BE A BLESSING.

Before Easter

Three days before the First Easter, something very special happened: a man named Jesus died on the cross for us.  Three days later, the Son of God rose again from the dead.  He saw His disciples and spoke to over 500 people.  Then, the Bible says He rose into heaven through the clouds.  And one day, He will come again for us.

But the angel said to the women, “Do not be afraid, for I know that you seek Jesus who was crucified. He is not here, for he has risen, as he said. Come, see the place where he lay.” (Matthew 28:5-6, ESV) Bible Gateway

This is the Easter story that many have never heard.  Since the Bible says to, “Go into all the world to preach the Gospel,” my church takes the opportunity every year to invite our local community to celebrate Easter with us.  We call this the, “Kids Easter Resurrection Celebration,” also known as the “ERC.”

In this post, I’ll take you through what it was like and also share some testimonies of lives who were ministered to.

Things To Do

Easter Resurrection CelebrationThere were so many activities this year:  live performances from our elementary students, an interactive story by the Youth Group, and a play by the Young Adults, and of course free food, crafts and games, and moon bounces.

Our elementary kids put on a very nice show, dancing and singing in their brightly colored shirts about our Lord Jesus Christ.

The Youth Group enjoys performing an interactive story in an outside tent that’s nicely lit up.

Every year, some of the Young Adults perform a skit based on a well-known theme with a message to give your heart to Jesus.  This year, the theme was Willy Wonka.

Lives Reached

This is my favorite part, the stories about the lives who were touched by the Gospel!  The Lord could have reached them another way, but He chose to use the time at our ERC.

Hope

A wife whose husband unfortunately passed away recently was able to come.  Her husband worked with one of our members, and she is a believer.  Pastor Scott, whose first wife, Janet, passed away from cancer over 15 years ago, was able to share with the wife that life does return to normal in time.  She was very encouraged to be around the people of God, and said that as soon as she came on the property, she felt the love of God.

“By this all people will know that you are my disciples, if you have love for one another.” (John 13:35, ESV) Bible Gateway

Another godly lady from our fellowship was able to comfort the wife with her own experience as well, as a very close friend had passed away in a car accident when she was young.  Since the ERC, these ladies have been in touch.

Excited to Come

My friend, Katie, met a nice young lady at Gold’s Gym.  She’s a believer and very excited about the Lord. Not having kids didn’t deter her from attending an event focused on kids (our ERC).  She came, just wanting to be where God was.

She also visited on a Sunday morning service.  As Katie was practicing with the band (she’s our wonderful pianist!), two of our friends were able to spend time ministering with the young lady.  Another lady, Mrs. Carr, spoke with her.  After service, she gave her money to buy some spiritual books from the church bookstore.

Her job has taken her to Florida.  It’s a blessing the Lord allowed so many of our paths to cross with hers.

Challenged by the Lord’s Return

This is an exciting testimony of how the Lord is drawing a particular man.  For the sake of our story, he is known as Mike.  Mike, who works for a member of our church, was building a deck at a church family’s house. One of their teenage sons, Zach, shared the Gospel with him.  “Man, is that boy a Christian!” Mike said of him to his employer.

Later, Mike and his family attended the ERC.  He said he’s never met so many friendly people.  The Lord is really drawing him.

“And you will hear of wars and rumors of wars. See that you are not alarmed, for this must take place, but the end is not yet.” (Matthew 24:6, ESV) Bible Gateway

Lastly so far, Mike and his cousin attended our Spring Car Show (look for my next post).  They saw 3rd Day Power’s ministry.  Mike was particularly struck by a comment about the recent bombing in Syria.  He was encouraged that the Lord is coming soon.

Overall, lives were ministered to.  Sometimes, the Lord gives us glimpses of how He is working.  I hope these few glimpses encouraged you to keep seeking the Lord with all your heart.  For those who do not yet know the Lord as their Savior, I pray that one day you will.

Mighty to Save, Pt. 3 – Calvary Temple Sterling VA Juvenile Detention Center Ministry

I’ve been a member of Calvary Temple Church in Sterling VA for over 25 years now.  We are passionate about reaching the lost and encouraging the Believers in our community.  We have many Events throughout the year to spread the Gospel.  I hope you find the following story to be a blessing.

Last week I gave a good report about ten kids receiving their salvation in the Juvenile Detention Center after a guest speaker shared his powerful testimony.  Today in our final installment of Mighty to Save I’m going to share the details of that testimony with you.

praying man

His father abandoned his family of 10 when he was only five years old.   As a child, his life was ruled by anger and violence. Robbery, vandalism, and excessive fighting was a means to survive.

He began smoking, drinking, and getting high in elementary school.  To put that in perspective for you, that is roughly the ages of 5 to 11 years old.  Soon his life was controlled by drugs and alcohol. Like a garbage can junkie, he was always trying out whatever new drug hit the street.  To support his habit he began dealing marijuana.  His drug use escalated and soon he was both using and dealing everything from several kilos of marijuana to hundreds of hits of LSD, PCP, heroin, speed, pills, and a long list of others.

He found a new family when he joined a dangerous gang which encouraged a lifestyle of crime, violence, and immorality with women.

Many times over he should have died from drug overdose, alcohol poisoning, or fallout from very dangerous drug dealings.  He was hit by cars four times, was in various motorcycle accidents, and nearly drowned more than once yet his life was spared.

The tide started to turn when lifelong friends abandoned him.  He was double crossed by people he trusted in the drug world and burned during some routine deals.  He began to have a growing realization that world is cold and uncaring.  And accumulating wealth, power and women by this dangerous lifestyle left him feeling empty.

The Lord used these to break him and bring him to his knees.  By the grace of God he called upon the Lord for salvation.  He forsook his entire former life and all ties with the drug world.  Turning his back on the money and power that could be obtained by sinful pursuits, he radically separated himself from the world and began to seek God with all of his heart spending that time in prayer and reading the Bible from morning till night for many months.

The Lord called him to begin street evangelism and plant churches often to reach those who society had cast off.  Soon he began to preach the Gospel as a missionary.  Even reaching the remote areas of the interior of East Africa.

For over 35 years this one man has faithfully continued to reach out to those who need Jesus and many, many lives around the world have been touched.  His life is a testimony to the mercy of God.  There is no sin you can commit that God can’t forgive you.  There is no darkness you can hide in that the blood of Jesus is not powerful enough to cleanse you if you call on Him.

If God can do all this through one man with this past what can he do through you?

Mighty To Save, Pt. 2 – Calvary Temple Sterling VA Juvenile Detention Center Ministry

rebellious kids

I’ve been a member of Calvary Temple Church in Sterling VA for over 25 years now.  We are passionate about reaching the lost and encouraging the Believers in our community.  We have many Events throughout the year to spread the Gospel.  I hope you find the following story to be a blessing.

My heart breaks for the many youth in our culture who are lost.  Some have grown up in the church and been drawn away by the secret power of lawlessness.  Others have never even heard that Jesus loves them.  They don’t know that they can be free from the bondage of this world.  That they don’t have to be alone and lost anymore.

Last week I shared some of the painful details from my son’s rejection of Jesus and choice to follow after the baser things of this world.  It is a heartbreaking time for us and I only gave you a small glimpse into the battle we’ve been a part of.  But God is faithful to us and His grace is sufficient.  This week I want to talk about one of the ministries of Calvary Temple which focuses on the troubled youth of our community: the outreach in the Loudoun County Juvenile Detention Center.

Volunteers visit the detention center twice a month for Bible study, mentoring and counseling with the kids.  Then a special guest speaker from the ministry visits once a month. Recently God used one of the guest speakers to bring a word that would touch the hearts of many.  The boys were amazed with this man’s testimony and it had a powerful impact on them!  They could not believe how God could use someone with this man’s background in the kingdom.

keep calm

At the next Bible study, two of the volunteers, Mark and Shelly, had over twenty boys in attendance and they discussed the guest speaker’s testimony.  They shared with the boys that God is looking for people that He can show himself mighty through, that they were all candidates if they could open their hearts to Jesus and let Him in!

Mark started off sharing the parable of the sower .  God is the Sower.  The Word of God is the seed and the condition of man’s heart is represented by the ground the seed falls on.   Then Satan comes immediately to steal the word being shared.  Mark told the kids that they needed Jesus in their hearts and not in their heads.  The wages of our sin is death but God gave us the free gift of salvation so that through believing on and committing to His son Jesus we can be reconciled to Him.  Only then can we receive the ability to do what He asks of us and love Him with all our hearts.

We are broken and lost without Jesus in our hearts.

Parable of the Sower Puppet Show from Calvary Temple VA Children’s Ministry

At the end of the meeting, Mark shared that nothing, no man, no devil could keep them from coming to God but the Lord would not force His way into their hearts.  When they were asked if any of them wanted to receive the free gift of salvation and give their hearts to the Lord, immediately 5-6 hands went up! And by the time Mark had asked their names, 10 hands were up!  Ten souls won for the kingdom from one man’s testimony.

Mighty To Save Pt. 1 – Calvary Temple Sterling VA Juvenile Detention Center Ministry

rebellion

I’ve been a member of Calvary Temple Church in Sterling VA for over 25 years now.  We are passionate about reaching the lost and encouraging the Believers in our community.  We have many Events throughout the year to spread the Gospel.  I hope you find the following story to be a blessing.

Being a parent is hard.  And one of the hardest trials a parent has to face is raising a rebellious child.  My own son decided that he didn’t want to serve God when he was 14.  He wanted to leave our church and go to public school to get some street cred so he could impress other rebellious kids.  We were devastated but we wanted him to come to the realization for himself that he needed Jesus.  His first day of public school, the first kid he met offered him ecstasy and he accepted it.  He was instantly addicted.  If he could get his hands on it he would take it.  He didn’t run with the wrong crowd – he WAS the wrong crowd – and the first time he ran away from home was on my birthday. Happy Birthday to me.  Sometimes parenting stinks. get a dog

His school called us in several times and told us that we must be the problem because his behavior was so dangerous and erratic.  A child wouldn’t run away from home unless it was a bad home life – right?  Within two months he was expelled because they couldn’t control him either.

horror sectionOver the next year he was constantly high.  He ran away from home repeatedly.  We had regular visits from the Sheriff’s office and Social Services accusing us of being bad parents.  We expected to be arrested every time there was a knock on the door.

He found a family that believed his fictional sob story about how bad his life was living on the mean streets of Cascades in Loudoun County and they took him in.  They became his enablers as he sat in their house playing video games and getting high every day while they were at work.  His sad day brightened up when their teenage daughter came home from school every day.  I’ll let you connect the dots.  This helpful family assisted him in applying for emancipation on the grounds that we, his parents, were abusive.  We took him to meet with a child psychologist and she wanted to institutionalize him for being a narcissistic sociopathWith the course that he was on he was either going to kill himself or someone else or end up in prison.  The only thing that saved his life was an intervention at Teen Challenge.

Teen Challenge was like a cross between a Juvenile Detention Center, a Military School and a Bible based Rehab Center.  The year and a half he was there was the best time we ever had with him.  He was off the drugs, he repented for all the pain he had caused us, he even counseled with other parents who were bringing their kids to Teen Challenge and encouraged them that they were doing the right thing.  But the change didn’t last.  Within a year of coming home he had run away again and was back on drugs.  He turned 18 about six weeks after leaving and then there was nothing we could do but pray. Four years have gone by and I’m still believing for his salvation.  The passage of scripture the Lord has put in my heart is:

Zephaniah 3:17 – The Lord your God is with you; He is mighty to save.

I’m believing for my son’s salvation and my heart goes out to other parents who are going through similar circumstances with their children.

God was the perfect parent and both of His kids rebelled.  You are in good company.

In part two we will take a look at a Calvary Temple outreach to the Juvenile Detention Center where the lives of kids just like mine are being saved from a life of drugs and destruction.  Stay tuned.
